Winter offers a unique and enchanting backdrop for exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities, especially when it comes to snow and ice. These natural elements provide endless opportunities for hands-on learning and creativity. Whether it's studying the geometry of snowflakes, conducting experiments on the properties of ice, or building intricate snow structures, snow and ice become the perfect mediums to engage curious minds.
By integrating STEAM concepts into winter play, let’s transform snowy days into educational adventures that inspire discovery, innovation, and artistic expression. Our winter wonderland of STEAM activities can make the cold season both fun and intellectually stimulating.
Here are some STEAM-based activities for fun (and learning) on these snowy days.
Science: Snow Density Science: Compare the density of different types of snow

(fresh powder vs. packed snow). Measure and weigh samples, then calculate and compare their densities. This activity involves both scientific observation and math skills.
Technology: Solar Energy in Snow: Explore how snow affects solar energy collection. Use small solar panels and measure the energy output on a snowy day versus a clear day, integrating technology and environmental science.
Engineering: Ice Sculpture Engineering: Freeze different shapes of ice blocks and build sculptures. Discuss the properties of ice, how it changes shape when it melts, and what makes a structure stable.
Art: Snow Art: Use food coloring and spray bottles to create colorful snow art. This activity combines art and science by exploring how colors mix and how they look on the white snow canvas.
Mathematics: Snow Density and Measurement: Measure and compare the density of snow by collecting samples and weighing them. Use math to calculate the volume and density and discuss how snow density affects things like avalanche risk or water tables. Water tables tend to drop during winter due to frozen ground, but rise significantly in spring when snow melts and water seeps into the soil.

Exploring STEAM through snow and ice activities opens a world of creativity, discovery, and fun. By blending the wonders of winter with hands-on educational experiences, let’s ignite our children's curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of the natural world. Winter brings us endless opportunities for learning and innovation.
Winter in North Dakota can be viewed as a season of beauty, activity, and community. Embrace the cold season as a unique classroom, where every snowflake and icicle can inspire scientific inquiry and artistic expression. The planned Destination Park, which is adjacent to the Grand Forks Children’s Museum will embrace the outdoors for all seasons with a special focus on integrating winter fun into its design. Who knows, we might even start looking forward to the winter season each year!
