Friendly Forks: Where Early Childhood Meets Community

There’s a moment in early childhood when the world suddenly expands. Toddlers who once explored through touch, stacking, lifting, and carrying, begin to look outward toward people, places, and the routines that shape daily life. At the Grand Forks Children’s Museum, that shift happens right at the edge of the Big Backyard. Step a few feet forward, and you enter Friendly Forks, a child sized town patterned after Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and designed for children in the early childhood years, who are ready to imagine themselves as part of a community.

Friendly Forks isn’t just a pretend town. It’s the developmental bridge between toddlerhood and early childhood. This is the area where children move from exploring objects to exploring roles, relationships, and how a community works. After mastering the physical confidence of the Big Backyard, children step into Friendly Forks ready to try something new: being the builder, the shopper, the caregiver, the chef, the performer, the neighbor.

In this miniature town, familiar places become invitations. Children recognize the rhythms of grocery shopping, cooking, caring for others, visiting a clinic, or creating art and not because they’ve been taught these roles, but because they’ve watched them unfold in their own lives. Friendly Forks gives kids the chance to try these roles on, to experiment with responsibility, kindness, and collaboration in a space designed just for them.

What makes Friendly Forks special isn’t the scale of the environment, it’s the way children use it. They gather ingredients in the grocery store, then carry them to the café to ‘cook’ for a friend. They step onto the stage to perform a story against changing backdrops, then rush to the clinic to “treat” a stuffed animal. They build a structure, then negotiate with another child about how to make it stronger. Every movement becomes a lesson in communication, sharing, empathy, and how a community works.

Parents and caregivers will feel it too. Friendly Forks is full of recognizable settings; the places that spark memories, stories, and conversations across generations. This will be a space where adults can slow down and watch their children step confidently into the world they know by discovering how a community works by becoming part of it.

Friendly Forks is more than imaginative play. It’s early childhood in motion. It’s a place where children begin to understand themselves not just as explorers, but as contributors and collaborators. It’s a celebration of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, and the people who make this region vibrant. Friendly Forks reflects a simple belief: every child deserves a place where belonging begins.

The Grand Forks Children’s Museum and exhibit construction is underway. This town is already taking shape. Soon, our community’s children will step into Friendly Forks, ready to imagine, ready to collaborate, and ready to discover the joy of being part of something bigger.
