Harvest Hustle: Growing Up in the Red River Valley

In the Red River Valley, agriculture isn’t just an industry, it’s a way of life. It shapes our seasons, our communities, and the quiet pride of the people who call Grand Forks and East Grand Forks home. Harvest Hustle brings that story to life through fast paced, hands on play that celebrates the region’s role in feeding North Dakota, the nation, and the world. It’s a place where children discover the journey from seed to stomach, not through explanation, but through movement, curiosity, and the thrill of watching something happen, because they made it happen.

The Red River Valley is one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the country, known for wheat, soybeans, sugar beets, potatoes, corn, and more. These crops travel from our fields to dinner tables near and far, and Harvest Hustle gives children a chance to step inside that story. They see how planting, growing, harvesting, processing, shipping, selling, preparing, and eating are all connected, and how the work happening right here in Grand Forks helps feed people across the country.

At the heart of Harvest Hustle is motion. Children push, drop, roll, sort, lift, and redirect materials through chutes, tubes, conveyors, and the Ball Wall. Every action creates a reaction. This is a perfect introduction to early engineering, prediction, and problem solving. A ball dropped here appears over there. A vegetable sorted in one bin triggers movement in another. A lever pulled sends something racing across the wall. Even the train switches become part of the learning, guiding balls into movable train cars where the sorting cycle begins again. Children learn that their choices matter, and that the world is full of invisible connections waiting to be discovered.

Through all this motion, children are also exploring early science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) concepts without even realizing it. Harvest Hustle invites them to experiment with gravity and motion, sequencing and sorting, speed and direction, and the paths, patterns, and outcomes that emerge when they change a variable or try a new idea. It’s STEAM learning made tangible. It’s the kind of learning that sticks because it’s felt, tested, and discovered through play.

Harvest Hustle also helps children understand that food systems are made of many connected steps and people, and that no single part works alone. They see how farmers, truck drivers, processors, grocers, chefs, and families all play a role in getting food from the field to the table. It’s a simple, joyful introduction to how a community works.

A multi tiered train table sits nearby, extending the story of agriculture beyond the field. Children guide trains through a miniature landscape inspired by Grand Forks and the Red River Valley, passing familiar landmarks, prairie stretches, and the historic depot before reaching a grain elevator and bin at the far end. It’s a small, hands on reminder of how rail connects farms to markets, communities to one another, and the region’s harvest to the wider world.

The space naturally sparks teamwork. Children fall into roles as gatherers, sorters, loaders, movers, senders. They negotiate, communicate, and problem solve together as they keep the ‘farm’ running smoothly. Their play mirrors the real collaboration that keeps our region’s agricultural community thriving.

This exhibit also supports whole body movement through climbing, lifting,

reaching, pushing, and carrying. These large scale interactions build strength, coordination, and body awareness, helping children feel powerful and capable. As there is no single right answer in Harvest Hustle, children gain confidence through experimentation and discovery. They choose what to move, where to send it, and how to keep the system flowing. Every outcome belongs to them.

Harvest Hustle is more than a series of exhibits. It’s a celebration of the people who plant, tend, harvest, and feed us. It’s a tribute to the quiet, extraordinary work that defines Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Harvest Hustle is a place where children begin to understand themselves not just as explorers, but as contributors and collaborators, part of a larger story that starts right here in the Red River Valley.

The Grand Forks Children’s Museum and the exhibits are under construction. Soon, children will step into Harvest Hustle ready to move, ready to discover, and ready to feel the pride of watching something grow.
